For First Responders and Personnel Handling Hazardous Materials

  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER Initial

    This course is designed for laborers, equipment operators, and supervisory personnel engaged in hazardous substance removal or other activities which expose (or potentially expose) workers to hazardous substances and health hazards.  The course meets the 40-hour off-site training requirements mandated by CFR 29 1910.120(e)(3-4).  Coursework includes lectures, demonstrations, hands-on training, individual respirator fit testing, course review and a written examination.  Topics covered include:

    • Regulations governing occupational safety and health, medical surveillance plans, health and safety plans, illumination and sanitation, and hazard communications
    • Rights of employers and employees under OSHA and EPA laws
    • Types of potential exposures to chemical, biological, and radiological hazards
    • Types of human responses to these hazards, and recognition of these responses
    • Fundamentals of chemical hazards such as vapor pressure, boiling points, and flash points
    • Fire and explosion hazards of chemicals
    • General safety hazards such as electrical, excavation, and working surface hazards
    • Confined space entry procedures
    • Safe use of engineering controls
    • Use of air sampling and monitoring equipment
    • Drum and container sampling and safeguarding procedures
    • Key elements of an effective spill control program
    • Proper use and limitation of material handling equipment
    • Safe preparation of containers for shipping and transport
    • Methods of communication while wearing respiratory protection
    • Personal Protective Equipment
    • Decontamination procedures, and
    • Sources of additional hazard information
    • We may also provide, at your request, Mold Remediation and Bloodborne Pathogens courses

  • 8 hour HAZWOPER Refresher

    This course is designed for laborers, equipment operators, and supervisory personnel engaged in hazardous substance removal or other activities which expose (or potentially expose) workers to hazardous substances and health hazards. The course meets the 8-hour annual refresher training requirements mandated by CFR 29 1910.120(e)(8).  Coursework includes lectures, demonstrations, hands-on training, individual respirator fit testing, course review and a written examination.  Topics covered include:

    • Review of and retraining on relevant topics covered in the 40-hour program, as appropriate, based on reports by the students on their work experiences
    • Updates on developments with respect to material covered in the 40-hour course
    • Review of changes to pertinent provisions of EPA or OSHA standards or laws
    • Introduction of additional subject areas, as appropriate, such as how to manage jobs for more efficiency and profit
    • Hands-on review of new or altered personal protective gear and decontamination equipment or procedures, and
    • Newly developed air and contaminant monitoring equipment
